The word passed through an older form *vurea/*vureare in early Romanian before reaching its current state (compare the phonetic evolution of durea).\nThe 1st, 2nd, and 3rd person singular present forms (vreau, vrei, vrea) were reformed analogically on the form of the infinitive and imperfect; cf. the original forms now used exclusively for the (auxiliary verb) future indicative tense (voi). Compare to English will in the archaic sense \"to desire, want\".\nCognate to Aromanian voi, vreari, Italian volere.",
